Rabbit Skins Grading Scale
If you are looking to purchase rabbit skins for any purpose, it is important to know what the different grades mean so that you can get the best value for what you plan on using them from. Not all rabbit skins are the same, so it’s important to know the differences.
The lowest grades are either clipper grade or trading post grade. Clipper grade skins have a lot of yellowing and are not particularly good to look at, but can be used for the inside lining of things or for testing and practicing with clippers. Trading post grade skins have slightly less yellowing, but will also have thinner hair. These are the most-used for amateurs who want something to practice with, and are often bought by the Boy Scouts for smaller craft projects.
The next grade up is the craft grade. These skins are in slightly better shape than the clipper or trading post skins, but they will have minor defects such as bald spots, tears, or holes that make using the whole skin difficult. However, they are still excellent for people who intend to cut them up into smaller pieces anyway to use for crafts. Again, these can be used as linings on the inside of gloves, mittens, muffs, or jackets.
The gift shop grade skins are good quality and have few, if any, defects. They are called gift shop grade because they are typically sold in gift shops. They have fairly consistent fur quality, and many people can’t easily tell the difference between this grade and the better grade. Although these are mostly used as souvenirs, they can be used for crafts and lining the outside of garments as well.
The better grade skins are also sometimes sold in gift shops, and can be used in crafts and projects that require a much higher quality of fur than the craft of even gift shop quality. They rarely have imperfections, and those that do are minor and do not affect the overall quality of the skin. These skins have very consistent length in the hair, which is the main difference between these and the gift shop grade. This is the grade that is most commonly used at the outside lining of jackets.
The heavy grade rabbit skins are skins that are from large rabbits that have heavy fur. rabbit skins that are in this category are further broken down into A, B, and C quality skins.
